Donor Advised Funds

If you have a Donor Advised Fund, you can make an important difference for children and their families in Idaho. Our vision drives us to work toward all Idaho children arriving at adulthood ready to succeed as individuals – in families and in the workforce.

*Please note that the IRS prohibits the use of Donor Advised Funds where more than an incidental benefit is received by the donor in return (e.g. event table/tickets, purchase of auction items). All table/ticket and auction purchases, therefore, must be funded personally outside of a Donor Advised Fund. For further guidance, please consult with your Donor Advised Fund administrator.

IRA Gifts

Charitable gifts of appreciated stock or mutual funds are a smart tax strategy. Idaho Voices for Children supporters may be able to save two ways when making a stock donation:

  • Avoid capital gains and investment taxes.
  • Receive a charitable income tax deduction.

Here’s what Charles Schwab says about this method of giving:

“Donating investments–especially highly appreciated securities–instead of cash can be a very effective and tax-efficient way to support a charity.”

The Wall Street Journal touted this method of giving, saying:

“While the taxpayer doesn’t get a deduction for the gift, neither does it count as income. This popular move can also help reduce a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income, which in turn can help minimize Medicare premiums or taxes on Social Security benefits.”

Please note two specific points for IRA giving:

  1. The gift must be made from appreciated stocks or mutual funds, and you must have owned the securities for at least a year.
  2. The securities must be transferred directly to Idaho Voices for Children/Jannus, Inc.

Charitable IRA Distribution gifts offer you many benefits:

  • Use all or a portion of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) to make a gift directly from your IRA account to Idaho Voices for Children/Jannus,INC, and you don’t pay income taxes on the amount you donate. This reduces your taxable income, even if you don’t itemize.
  • Gifts from an IRA account, up to a total of $100,000 each year ($200,000 for married couples) can be made each year.
  • Transferring the funds is relatively easy; just use our sample letter to send your IRA administrator.
  • You must be 72 years old or older by December 31, 2020.
  • The donated portion of your RMD must be transferred directly from your IRA fund administrator to Idaho Voices for Children/Jannus,INC.
  • The gift cannot exceed $100,000 in any year for an individual or $200,000 for a married couple.
  • Your gift must be received at Idaho Voices for Children by December 31.

If you are using an IRA checkbook to make your gift, please send your check as early as possible. IRA gifts must be received and deposited in Idaho Voices for Children/Jannus,INC. bank account on or before December 31 to count as this year’s distribution. Don’t delay.

Brian wants to make a gift to Idaho Voices for Children in support of Idaho helping Idaho kids and their families. He wants to do it as tax-efficiently as possible. Brian owns stock which he bought for $5,000, and it’s now worth $25,000. Because of his tax bracket, if he sells the stock, he will pay capital gains taxes.

Instead of converting his stock to cash, Brian donates the stock directly to Idaho Voices for Children avoiding the capital gains tax completely. Plus, Brian enjoys a charitable income tax deduction on the full market value of the stock $25,000.

*Please note that IRA gifts support Idaho Voices for Children’s entire mission and will not be designated to a specific campaign or location. Your gift will be used where it is needed most. We encourage you to consult with a tax advisor to discuss your specific situation.
